6 Steps To Install Tiles The Right Way

tile installation steps

Installing tiles on the floor or wall isn’t an easy task. Precision is critical and you have to do it right to avoid wasting your resources. So for this post, we’re going to give some tile installation steps and tips for you to follow. This applies to both porcelain and ceramic wall tile installation.

Step 1. Preparing floor for tile

Always start with a clean surface to have the best result. First, make sure that you fixed uneven areas and you’ve patched out holes. If you’ve just cleaned the area, make sure that there are no soap scums or grease left.

Before starting, remove all the appliances or pieces of furniture surrounding the area of installation. This will let you move around smoothly while setting the tiles.

Step 2. Start with your layout

Start on a center point and lay rows of loose tiles on both directions from the defined center. Line it up uniformly as if you’re already setting it with the adhesive.

If you need to cut the tiles, do it as early as possible. You wouldn’t want to be in a hurry with the adhesive drying on the surface while you’re still snapping tile pieces into two.

Step 3. Put on the adhesive

Once the tiles are cut out properly, it’s time to apply the adhesive to set it. Remember that you should only prepare enough adhesive that you can use in under 30 minutes. This is to prevent the mixture from drying.

Apply the adhesive with a trowel. Using the notched side lay the adhesive into ridges. Also, don’t spread the adhesive if you can’t set it within the next 15 minutes.

Step 4. Set the tiles

Once you’ve laid out the adhesive, it’s time to install the tiles starting from the center. Finish one grid at a time and move on to the next. We suggest working outward so you won’t be trapped into the corner when the last tile is left.

Avoid sliding the tiles into place. Always insert spacers and leave a ¼-inch gap between the wall and the tile if you’re tiling new concrete floor.

Step 5. Time to tap

After setting all the tiles, get a rubber mallet and tap the tiles gently. This will ensure that the tile has a solid bond with the adhesive and that the leveling is accurate.

Some of the adhesives will squirt during the process. You can use a putty knife to remove it. Let the tiles set for 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.

Step 6. Grout the joints

Again, mix grout that’s enough to be applied in the next 30 minutes. Remove the tile spacers and spread grout in the empty spaces. You can use a squeegee to squeeze the grout in.

Always remove the excess grout right away so it won’t dry on the tile. Let the grout set for 20 minutes before wiping any remaining dirt from the tiles.
